Accidents and Old Lace and Other Stories

Accidents And Old Lace And Other StoriesAccidents And Old Lace And Other Stories by Graham Ingels
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Accidents and Old Lace and Other Stories is a collection of EC horror stories illustrated by Ghastly Graham Ingels.

It's getting difficult to write new things about these EC Artists editions from Fantagraphics. Many of the tales look better in black and white and Graham Ingels' work is a prime example of this. A lot of his panels take on the look of an old woodcut when the color is removed. Ghastly Graham Ingels is in my EC top five and pulls out all the stops in this one. Some of the stories are from when the Wertham hysteria was in full swing and the writing was on the wall so there is some grotesque stuff, as if the EC guys were racing the devil to get everything out the door.

The tales are by the usual suspects, Gaines and Feldstein, with Otto Binder, Jack Olek and Carl Wessler thrown into the mix. The titular tale, Accidents and Old Lace, is one of the best stories in the collection, but there are other standouts like Shoe Button Eyes, Wish You Were Here, and The New Arrival.

It's not my favorite Graham Ingels collection but Accidents and Old Lace is a great addition to the EC Library from Fantagraphics. Four out of five suspiciously intricate tapestries.
