Nexus Omnibus Volume 3 by Mike Baron
My rating: 4 of 5 stars
Nexus Omnibus Volume 3 collects Nexus #26-39 from First Comics.
I'm jumping all over in my Nexus reading and I wound up getting this one fairly cheaply. I'll have to infer what happened in the second Omnibus because that one is out of print and expensive.
Anyway, everyone's favorite executioner of mass murderers is back. In this volume, Nexus deals with an extremist uncle, inadvertantly sends a couple Quatros on a rampage, visits an ancient library encompassing the knowledge of a thousand species, and sends a lot of bad guys to their graves after wrestling with his ethics.
Steve Rude's artwork is the main attraction for me. Slick, no wasted lines, no fucking around, equally adept at human moments and intergalactic super hero action. The fill-in artists are all good and do a good job at maintaining a largely consistent feel but still aren't Steve Rude. Even with heavy hitters like Paul Smith, Jose Luis Garcia Lopez, and Butch Guice, it's hard to beat The Dude.
Mike Baron's got a lot of irons in the fire on this. He's constantly planting seeds for future events but each individual issue stands on its own.
Nexus is one of those comics I deeply regret not trying 30 or 40 years ago. Four out of five stars.
