Tarzan: The Joe Kubert Years, Vol. 1 by Joe Kubert
My rating: 4 of 5 stars
Tarzan: The Joe Kubert Years, Volume 1 collects Tarzan #207-214
At this point, I don't remember what sent me down the Tarzan comics rabbit hole but this one popped up on my radar on the cheap. Joe Kubert plus Tarzan sounded like a winning combination...
And it was!
Written, drawn, and possibly edited by legend Joe Kubert, this is a great book. Joe Kubert draws a great jungle, realistic jungle dwellers, and believable foliage. I love Russ Manning's Tarzan but Kubert's looks like he could actually take down an ape. Kubert's Tarzan is drawn in his usual gritty style, making his jungle feel like a dirty, lived-in place.
The stories don't feature any of the Tarzan supporting cast and seem to be early in his life. Tarzan takes on giants, apes, alligators, savages, and the rest of the Tarzan staples. The stories are fairly typical Tarzan fare, honestly.
I have to question the wisdom of using the first 4 DC issues to tell Tarzan's origin. Who didn't know Tarzan's origin at that point given the TV and movie exposure plus the newspaper strip and 200+ issues of the comic prior to DC getting the license?
Tarzan: The Joe Kubert Years, Volume 1 was some great jungle action, although many animals were harmed. Four out of five stars.
