Wrinkles by Paco Roca
My rating: 4 of 5 stars
When caring for him becomes too much, Emilio's family puts him in an assisted living facility. His new friend Miguel shows him the ropes as he slides deeper into the abyss of Alzheimer's.
I really liked The House so I grabbed this one when Fantagraphics had their big sale last November.
This is a powerful little book, a funny but sad tale of life in a nursing home and one man's slide into dementia. The art style is cartoony yet suitably poignant, much like the style Roca used in The House. The writing tries to put a light hearted spin on things but the undercurrent of sadness and despair is there all the time as Emilio gradually loses himself to dementia.
Wrinkles is a sad and powerful book. Four out of five stars.
