The Futurians: Volume 2

The Futurians Volume Two (The Futurians, #2)The Futurians Volume Two by Dave Cockrum
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

When asteroids hit the earth, the Futurians try to help humanity pick up the pieces...

Marvel Graphic Novel #9 is one of my favorite graphic novels of the 1980s so when I found this in the 3 for $10 bin at the last comicon I went to, I know I had to have it.

The Futurians Volume Two picks up where the graphic novel leaves off, with the Futurians left with two bags of shit to hold after asteroids hit the earth. For those keeping score, The Futurians are a super team created by Dave Cockrum and some of their costumes and concepts were repurposed for the all-new, all-different X-Men. Maybe you've heard of them?

Anyway, the team of almost X-Men battle giant bugs but their greatest threat may be Vandervecken, the man pulling their strings.

The characters are an interesting bunch: Werehawk is a werehawk. Duh. Blackmane is a stand-in for Sabretooth. Avatar seems to be Superman with Magneto's personality. Sunswift is the Phoenix. The rest don't have clear analogs in the Marvel universe but they all feel X-Men-ish.

Dave Cockrum's art is at its peak. Seriously, in the early to mid 1980s, not many people could hang with Dashing Dave. His story isn't bad, either. It could be a straight up super hero tale but the post-apocalyptic angle gives it a little something extra.

Honestly, the only gripe I have with The Futurians is that it didn't run for another hundred issues or so. 3.5 out of 5 stars.
