Sucker Bait and Other Stories

Sucker Bait and Other StoriesSucker Bait and Other Stories by Graham Ingels
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Sucker Bait and Other Stories contains 26 stories illustrated by Ghastly Graham Ingels.

It's getting hard to come up with new ways to express how much I enjoy these EC Artist Collections from Fantagraphics. This one is no different.

With writers Al Feldstein and the great Ray Bradbury in tow, Ingels serves up a mess of rotting corpses, double dealing wives, double dealing husbands, ghouls, and other nastiness. As I've said before, Graham Ingels could draw the hell out of a shambling, decomposing corpse.

Ingels' drawings are highly detailed and his heavy use of black makes me think color would be kind of a waste of time. In stark black and white, a lot of the panels resemble woodcuts with lots of intricate line work.

Ghastly Graham was ahead of his time in many ways. It would be an exaggeration to call some of the tales gut-wrenching but once Miles is old enough to read, I'll probably put this on a high shelf out of his reach until he's 10-12.

Ghastly Graham Ingels shows why he's a master in Sucker Bait and Other Stories. Four out of five shambling corpses.
