Judgment Day and Other Stories by Joe Orlando
My rating: 3 of 5 stars
Judgement Day and Other Stories contains 23 stories illustrated by Joe Orlando.
Joe Orlando is not one of my favorite EC Artists. In fact, he's closer to the other end of the scale. However, I respect what Joe did at DC as an editor and I eventually acquired this. I guess being the worst player on the best team isn't that bad because I enjoyed this.
The stories in this tome are written by the usual EC suspects like Gaines and Feldstein, plus Otto and Earl Binder, Jack Olek, and the ever slumming Ray Bradbury. As much as I shit on him, Joe Orlando's art is still pretty good, although his style isn't always suited for the black and white format of these artists editions.
As for the stories themselves, there were some heavy hitters in here, like the titular story, Judgment Day. There were other winners like Disassembled, The Automaton, The Fossil, and the three Adam Link tales. There are a few others warning of the dangers of utopia and things of that nature that seem particularly timely in this day and age. Not bad for stories that are 70 years old at this point.
It's hard to keep coming up with new things to say about these EC Artists editions. They're fucking great.
When you're on a team like the EC crew, being one of the lesser players isn't all that bad. Joe Orlando knows his way around a robot. 3 out of 5 stars.
