Hangman

The Hangman, Vol. 1The Hangman, Vol. 1 by Frank Tieri
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

When hitman Mike Minetta is killed by The Hangman, he is offered The Hangman's gig by the devil himself. Mike accepts and finds that maybe the devil wasn't telling him everything...

This was on sale at the Archie store. I knew a little about the Red Circle version of the Hangman but not much other than his look. Anyway, this was good shit!

Mike Minetta, aka Mikey Ice, is a hitman who runs afowl of a supernatural agent of justice called The Hangman. Upon Mike's death, the Hangman is released from his duties and Mike winds up in hell, offered the Hangman's post by the devil. Mike returns to earth with the task of dispatching as many dirtbags as possible.

It's a dark book. Frank Tieri makes Mike a compelling, slightly sympathetic lead for a shitbag hitman. I like the mythology of the Hangman character that Frank establishes and all the hints at future stories. Felix Ruiz's art is pefect for the gritty, noir horror feel of the book.

My only gripe with this is that it feels like the beginning of a larger story and this is all there is so far. I hope Frank Tieri gets to tell the rest of his tale sooner or later. Four out of five nooses.
