La Mano del Destino by J Gonzo
My rating: 4 of 5 stars
When luchador Ernesto el General is betrayed and unmasked by his partners, he hits rock bottom. When a mysterious promoter endows him with new power to get revenge on his enemies, he becomes La Mano del Destino!
This jumped out at me during my first visit to a comic shop in couple years. A comic about luchadors? How could it be bad?
It could not. The lock of this grabbed me right away. It was like finding a comic featuring El Santo that Jack Kirby drew during the Silver Age during a drunken bender in Mexico. La Mano del Destino must defeat all of Jefe's luchadors on his way to taking out the big man himself. But who is La Mano's benefactor? And what secret is his trainer harboring?
The back matter reveals that La Mano del Destino started as a portfolio project and turned into a labor of love and it shows. Silver age techniques, warts and all, are reproduced in one form or another: The garish color choices, the inking, even the distressed look of the paper, all crafted to make this feel like a silver age comic.
Visually, this is a stunning book. The story, however, is nothing revolutionary. It's a revenge tale about a good man who has been wronged. Granted, it's an exciting, action-packed revenge tale with some great twists. There was one reveal in particular I didn't see coming, though I should have.
La Mano del Destino is a great silver age style tale of wrestling and revenge. Four out of five planchas.
