The Perhapanauts First Blood by Todd Dezago
My rating: 4 of 5 stars
Only The Perhapanauts, agents of BEDLAM, stand between Earth and nasties from other dimensions...
This omnibus collects issues #1-4 of Perhapanauts, The Perhapanauts Not-Gigantic Color Special, and a new story called The Kelly Goblins.
I don't know what made me contribute to the Kickstarter for this but I'm glad I did. It's pretty fucking good.
I don't want to give too much away but Big the Bigfoot, Choopie the Chupacabra, a ghost named Molly, a psychic named Arisa, and a mystery man named MG protect Earth from incursions from other dimensions, sometimes while riding around in a flying saucer. It's Men in Black with a dash of the Doom Patrol and I was on board a few pages in.
The art has a quirky, minimalist feel to it and the coloring is on the subdued side of things. You can tell it's computer colored but it doesn't use 256 colors on every panel. The main story is told in four parts as the team goes about its cases, taking on extradimensional beasts of all kinds, and shorter stories unrelated to the main thread.
The writing is breezy but does a lot to establish the characters in as few pages as possible. Hints about MG's true nature and future storylines are scattered all over the place, making it essential that the rest of the series gets reprinted at some point.
Go read The Perhapanauts: First Blood unless you only like shitty comics. 4.5 out of 5 flying saucers.
