Ragnarök, Vol. 3: The Breaking of Helheim by Walter Simonson
My rating: 4 of 5 stars
Centuries after Ragnarok, the mostly dead corpse of Thor heads to Helheim to get some answers from Hel herself!
Walt Simonson's post-apocalyptic epic keeps marching ahead. Thor, Ratatosk, and Lady go up against more zombies and monsters than you can shake a war hammer at.
Simonson's art continues to amaze. It's crazy how much detail old Walt pours into every panel. One thing Simonson excels at is depicting the sheer size of the monsters Thor is battling, like Niddhogr the serpent. Much like the previous volumes, Thor and company visit all sorts of strange locales on their Highway to Hel, usually with a high body count.
While Ragnarok continues to be the most metal book out there, the pace seems to be slowing a little. While this book was action packed, it didn't do much to move things forward other than to piss off Thor's enemies. Where does he go from here?
I have to wonder how many more issues Simonson has planned. I would guess at least twelve. Thor still has to find Loki and his assembled enemies need to get got. I figure the series will end with Thor and the Midgard serpent killing each other and returning a semblance of normalcy to the Dusklands but we'll see.
Ragnarok Volume 3: The Breaking of Helheim sees Thor go to Hel and back and kill a lot of monsters in between. Four out of five hammers.
