Legends of the Dark Knight: Michael Golden

Legends of the Dark Knight: Michael Golden (Batman Family (1975-1978))Legends of the Dark Knight: Michael Golden (Batman Family by Bob Rozakis
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Legends of the Dark Knight: Michael Golden collects Michael Golden stories from Batman Family #15-20, Batman #295 #303, DC Special Series #15, Detective Comics #482, Batman Special #1 and Batman: Gotham Knights #22.

After being smitten by Michael Golden's art in the first year of The Micronauts, I was hungry for more. Fortunately, this collection was on the horizon.

It shouldn't be a surprise but Michael Golden can draw the shit out of the extended Batman family. His renditions of Batman, Man-Bat, Jason Bard, The Demon, and Ragman grace these pages. His Gotham is a city of tall skyscrapers, dirty alleys, and fithy sewers. His art here reminds me of 1970s era Alex Toth at times. His panel arrangements feel dynamic and do a lot to enhance the pace of the book.

The Batman stories of the late 1970s are my favorite era of Batman so these stories were right in my wheelhouse. The Player on the Other Side, the tale of the Wrath, was my favorite. It's not often when Batman encounters someone as dedicated and capable as he is.

It's hard to believe this is Michael Golden's earliest work. It holds up very well considering it's almost forty years old at this point.

Legends of the Dark Knight: Michael Golden is a gorgeous collection of Batman Family art from a great artist. Four out of five stars.
