Legacy of Mandrake the Magician by Erica Schultz
My rating: 4 of 5 stars
Mandragora Constanza Terrado Paz is a teenage magician, carrying on the legacy of her uncle Mandrake. That is, if she lives long enough to graduate high school.
I saw this on twitter and pre-ordered it based on the cover image and some jibberjabber about the process that went into making the book. I honestly don't know much about Mandrake the Magician apart from the Defenders of the Earth cartoon a zillion years ago.
Mandy Paz is a stage magician with a modicum of real magical powers. She and her mother live in a house once owned by Mandrake the Magician and her best friend LJ is the son of Mandrake's assistant, Lothar. A missing girl leads Mandy and LJ into a confrontation with a menace from uncle Mandrake's past.
As I mentioned, I have had little to no exposure to the original Mandrake the Magician but Erica Schultz and Diego Giribaldi have crafted a fine comic here. I'm reminded of Zatanna and Sabrina the Teenage Witch a bit. I love the look of the new Mandrake and I'm glad they didn't overly sexualize the character given she's a teenage girl.
The book flies by and each issue is satisfying on its own. I'm hoping the creative team gets to do more because it's a really engaging read. In the mean time, I guess I'll grab some Mandrake newspaper strip reprints and see what's up.
Legacy of Mandrake the Magician is a fun jumping on point for a new legacy character. I'm hungry for more. 4 out of 5 stars.
