The Comedy Of Jack Davis: Introduction by Bhob Stewart Afterword by Mort Todd by Jack Davis
My rating: 3 of 5 stars
The Comedy of Jack Davis is a collection of stories drawn by Jack Davis for Cracked in 1958 through 1962.
Jack Davis is one of my favorite EC horror artists and I'm a Cracked guy from way back so this was right in my wheelhouse.
Much like John Severin did in his Cracked collection, Jack Davis draws a variety of features in a variety of styles, using ink, duoshade. Conte crayon, and all kinds of other stuff.
My main gripe with the John Severin Cracked collection was that a lot of the humor was tied to the time it was created and I had no frame of reference. Apart from Sea Hunt and Peter Gunn spoofs, most of the humor in this one was timeless. Who doesn't like an article poking fun at cryogenics or moving from the city to the suburbs? It's still Cracked, though, so it's not like the two to four pagers are going to be head scratchers.
The Comedy of Jack Davis features great art by a master and most of the humor isn't tied to the time period it was published. 3.5 out of 5 stars.
