The Occult Files of Doctor Spektor Archives Volume 2

The Occult Files of Doctor Spektor Archives Volume 2The Occult Files of Doctor Spektor Archives Volume 2 by Donald F. Glut
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

The Occult Files of Doctor Spektor Archives Volume 2 collects The Occult Files of Doctor Spektor #8-12 plus stories narrated by Doctor Spektor from various horror anthologies.

The team of Donald F. Glut and Jesse Santos impressed me on Daggar the Invincible so I picked this up.

No two ways about it, this is the good shit. Over the course of five issues, famous occultist Doctor Adam Spektor and his assistant, the lovely Lakota Rainflower, go up against supernatural menaces like mummies, vampires, werewolves, mad scientists, and the Frankenstein Monster, among others.

By today's standards, the tales suffer a little but this was top of the line stuff for 1972. Glut puts Spektor through some hell and things are not all resolved by the end of the volume. Jesse Santos' Joe Kubert-like scratchy, gritty style really sells the stories for me, though. The non-Santos stories really emphasize how much of the workload Santos was carrying. His Spektor is slightly scruffy and looks like he's seen some shit, handsome or not.

By the end, I was hungry for more. I guess I'll be tracking down the other books in this series. Easily a four star read for me.
