Warlord of Mars Attacks!

Warlord of Mars AttacksWarlord of Mars Attacks by Jeff Parker
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

When humanity puts a lander on Mars, the big brained Martians invade earth and Earth's only hope is asleep in an abandoned gold mine in Arizona...

This collects Warlord of Mars Attacks #1-5. I'm a fan of both John Carter of Mars and Mars Attacks! so I had to pick this up.

Warlord of Mars Attacks is a fun read. It feels like a summer blockbuster, complete with quips. Jeff Parker is generally pretty funny and is here. Dean Kotz handles the art chores. His style is a little scratchy and I dig it, particularly his depictions of the Tharks and the big brained Martians, referred to as The Moonheads in the text so that's how I'll refer to them from this point hence.

The story links Barsoom with the Mars Attacks! aliens and also reconciles our version of Mars with Barsoom. Without giving away too much, there are battles on both Earth and Mars and humanity triumphs. John Carter is assisted by Dr. Norman, a descendant of Edgar Rice Burroughs, Maven, another scientist, and Ramon, a guy who won a contest to watch the landing on Mars.

Like I said, it's fun and not completely serious but still a good read. Parker throws in jokes to lighten the mood but he also throws some good concepts into the mix.

Four out of five stars.
