TOR!

TORTOR by Norman Maurer
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Tor from PS Artbooks collects Tor #1, 2-4 and Naza #1.

Joe Kubert is one of my favorite artists so I snapped this up when it popped up on the new releases at Instocktrades.com.

Tor is a caveman without a tribe, his constant companion a lemur-like creature named Chee-Chee. Tor battles dinosaurs, animals, and other cavemen in his travels. The stories are good for what they are, adventure stories set in 1,000,000 BC. Kubert's art makes them stand out from other caveman tales, gritty and exciting.

The backup feature, Danny Dreaming, is also good stuff. A modern boy named Danny gets transported to caveman times every time he falls asleep. Alex Toth even draws one of the stories while Kubert draws the rest. The art is easily as good as in the main feature and I love the concept.

Rounding out the collection is Naza with art by Dan Sparling. It's unrelated to the Tor stuff except it also features cavemen. Naza is an outcast within his own tribe but look who they come crawling to when shit goes south. Sparling is a great artist but he's no Kubert.

The stories are this are nothing special but the artwork is top of the line for the time period, early 1950s for Tor, early 60s for Naza. Four out of five stone axes.
