Marvel Unlimited Find: The Night Gwen Stacy Died and the Goblin's Last Stand

Amazing Spider-Man 121
date: June 1973
writer: Gerry Conway
artists: Gil Kane, John Romita, Tony Mortellaro
rating: 5 out of 5 stars

As Harry Osborn lies in bed, recovering from an overdose of LSD, his father Norman goes off the deep end and remembers his deepest secrets, that he is the Green Goblin and Peter Parker is his arch-enemy Spider-Man!  The Goblin blames Spider-Man for Harry's predicament and strikes at the wall-crawler and his loved ones.

The Green Goblin kidnaps Gwen Stacy and throws her off the George Washington bridge!  Spider-Man keeps her from hitting the water but she's dead when he pulls her up.

Wow.  That must have been surprising as hell when it dropped.  Did Gwen's heart give out or did the whiplash of Spidey's webbing break her neck?  There's going to be hell to pay in the next issue.

Gwen Stacy is dead and the police think Spider-Man killed her.  Spider-Man, however, has one thing on his mind: making the Green Goblin pay!

Spider-Man corners the Green Goblin in a warehouse and beats the piss out of him before coming to his senses.  Spider-Man means to haul the Goblin off to jail when the Green Goblin tries to impale Spidey on his glider, only to take it in the chest himself.

For the time period, these were two powerful tales and both had lasting impact.  Gwen has never been brought back to life in the main Marvel Universe and Osborn didn't come back for over thirty years.  Since death wasn't a revolving door in those days, these probably set the house on fire back in the day.

While the writing isn't as good as today, the feeling is there and Gil Kane and John Romita produced some iconic Spider-Man art.  Five out of five stars.
