Vampironica, Vol. 1 by Greg Smallwood
My rating: 3 of 5 stars
After walking in on a grisly scene at her father's mansion, Veronica Lodge is bitten and becomes... a vampire! Can she take out the head vampire and return things to normal?
On the heels of Afterlife with Archie and the 50% off sale the Archie shop was having, I grabbed this during a large impulse purchase of Archie horror books.
The premise is pretty much what the title indicates. Veronica is a vampire and has to deal with the situation. It felt like The Lost Boys meets Buffy to me.
The art by Greg Smallwood and Greg Scott gave the story a gritty, understated look with its subdued color palette. Visually, it was on the opposite end of the spectrum from Afterlife with Archie and Jughead: The Hunger but it worked very well. The story by the Smallwoods was good but there wasn't a lot of meat to it. It felt like three issues stretched into five. Also, I don't see how they'll be able to do more Vampironica given how it ended.
While not as substantial as other Archie horror books I've read, Vampironica was a fun read. Three out of five bloodsuckers.
