Shazam Family Giant: Mightiest Mortal

Shazam Family Giant: Mightiest MortalShazam Family Giant: Mightiest Mortal by C.C. Beck
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

Shazam Family Giant collects 100 pages worth of Golden Age Captain Marvel stories.

I found this on Amazon, printed up by an outfit called Mini-Komix. It appears to be public domain scans of old Captain Marvel comics with the color stripped out. Since Golden Age comics have muddy colors at times, the black and white art made for a better reading experience.

The stories themselves are enjoyable but formulaic. Captain Marvel encounters an evil doer, Billy Batson gets bound and gagged but somehow is able to summon Captain Marvel to save the day. One story, the Man Without a World, was reprinted in an Adventure Comics digest near the end of that title's run.

Overall, Shazam Family Giant: Mightiest Mortal is one of the better Golden Age Captain Marvel reading experiences I've come across in recent memory. Three out of five stars.
